LNG work on track

QCLNG is on target to complete its Curtis Island LNG plant with the first LNG delivery expected to China by 2014, according to a QCLNG spokesperson.

The QCLNG spokesman told The Observer significant progress was being made in construction on the mainland and preparatory works at Curtis Island for the Queensland Curtis LNG liquefaction plant.

“Construction of mainland facilities at the RG Tanna, Alf O'Rourke and Auckland Point sites to support the transport of materials and workers to the island are well under way,” he said.

“This includes the installation of piling for the ferry terminal that will give personnel access to Curtis Island.”

The spokesperson said site preparation on Curtis Island, which began late last year, also continued as earthworks progressed.

“Development of the construction dock on the island, a temporary loading facility to be accessed during the early construction stage of the LNG plant, is now in progress, with early works dredging completed and piling now in progress,” he said.

“Having this site access will enable delivery of materials, equipment and personnel for construction works at Curtis Island prior to the construction of the larger material offloading facility being completed. Clearance work on the site is ahead of schedule.

“Orders for all long-lead items for the LNG plant such as gas turbines and heat exchangers have been placed.”

The Queensland Curtis LNG Project involved expanding QGC's existing coal seam gas production in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland, building a 540km pipeline network linking the gas fields to Gladstone and construction of a natural gas liquefaction plant on Curtis Island where the gas would be converted to LNG for transport.

The project's first stage comprised two processing units, known as LNG trains.

These trains, which had a design life of at least 20 years, would produce a combined 8.5 million tonnes of LNG a year.

The site could accommodate an expansion to 12 million tonnes of LNG a year, subject to demand.
