Commercial and recreational anglers will only experience ‘restricted zones,’ not exclusion zones.
GLADSTONE boaties’ access to the channels will not be affected by ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the capacity of the port is more than sufficient to handle the anticipated increase, according to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
“There are no exclusion zones being introduced, but the normal security and safety zones will apply,” the spokesperson said.
In an attempt to answer recreational and commercial anglers’ concerns regarding future access to the Gladstone harbour, the Department of Transport and Main Roads told The Observer that while it was anticipating an increase in the number of ships using the harbour there would be clear paths for large and small vessels.
“Although the volume of both commercial and recreational traffic on the harbour is increasing, it is not expected that there will be any disruption to movement through and around the harbour,” the representative said.
“As a result we do not anticipate any issues and the existing shipping regulations, which all vessels should know, are also in place.”
The representative said Maritime Safety Queensland would ensure a minimum amount of restrictions.
“With the expected increase in ships using Gladstone, we’re ensuring that we’re fully prepared for the anticipated expansion and are currently recruiting an Assistant Harbour Master to meet these predicted demands.”
