Gas companies accept new CSG laws

COMPULSARY new reporting requirements for petroleum and gas companies planning exploration and production activities are now in force, according to Employment, Skills and Mining Minister Stirling Hinchliffe.

Under the new requirements, companies must now give affected landholders at least 10 business days written notice of any drilling, fraccing or certain exploration techniques.

Companies must also submit detailed reports to government about hydraulic fracturing activities - including the composition of all fluids used in each well and potential impacts on water aquifers.

Mr Hinchliffe said the Bligh Government supported the development of the Queensland mining and resources industries but it was important this was balanced with agriculture, environmental considerations and social impacts.

"These new laws are designed to make sure landholders know exactly what is happening on their land and when it is happening," Mr Hinchliffe said.

This comes after continual concern and reports about coal seam gas (CSG) proponents lack of transparency and the possible contamination and water reduction of the Great Artesian Basin and the taking over of land for gas wells.

Curtis Island proponents QGC told The Observer they will comply with the new laws.

“The current timeframe is 48 hours verbal notice before hand,” a QGC spokesperson said.

Mr Hinchliffe said the Bligh Government had listened to community concerns about the impact of resource exploration and production on rural landholders.

"We are committed to striking the right balance between landholders' interests, our environment and economic development," he said.

"These new regulations build on the added protections we have already delivered for landholders.

A Santos spokesman told The Observer they welcome all initiatives to keep landholders better informed and Santos will be complying with the legislation.
