Gladstone’s a go for gas.
The Federal Environmental Minister Tony Burke announced the long awaited environmental approvals today of two liquefied natural gas plants on Curtis Island.
The approvals signal a new era for Australian energy and a new era for Gladstone.
Tony Burke said both Santos (GLNG) and Queensland Gas Company (QCLNG) will have to meet tough standards with over 300 conditions applying to coal seam extraction and another 51 conditions relating to the Gladstone harbour.
“We have looked at the water issues within the Great Artesian Basin, the Great Barrier Reef and the environmental impacts on LNG development on Curtis Island,” Minister Burke said.
“We have made sure the the environmental values are protected.”
Acting Mayor Gail Sellers said the announcements are welcome news for the people of the Gladstone region and will be the impetus for further growth and economic prosperity for residents.
“The people of the Gladstone Region can expect growth in population; business and consumer confidence across all sectors and prosperity,” Cr Sellers said.
“The greatest challenge will be meeting the demands placed on social infrastructure.”
State member for Gladstone Liz Cunningham saidLNG will diversify Gladstone's base ... A good thing as we are economically exposed with a predominantly alumina based industry.
“As far as waiting, it is also important that the proper process is followed,” Ms Cunningham said.
“There are many in the area concerned at the siting of the plants. Their concerns must be properly considered.”
Federal member for Flynn Ken O’Doyd welcomed the decision to go ahead with the LNG industry in Queensland.
“This industry is vitally important to Gladstone and will give some certainty to business,” Mr O’Doyd said.
“But I stress that it is incumbent on both the state and federal governments to guarantee that the necessary safeguards are put in place to ensure Gladstone residents are not placed in harm’s way.
“I will also be making sure that strict environmental standards are applied along the length and breadth of this project.
