Weather ruins Cians run

A THIRD and an eighth in two classes at the Go Kart of Victoria City to Melbourne race has left a Gladstone karter pleased with his performance.

Cian Fothergill captured third and eighth in the Go Kart of Victoria City to Melbourne race on Sunday in leopard and clubman classes.

A THIRD and an eighth in two classes at the Go Kart of Victoria City to Melbourne race has left a Gladstone karter pleased with his performance, especially given the foreign conditions he was forced to combat.

Cian Fothergill endured inclement weather during the three days at the Todd Road circuit.

“It was cold, wet and windy, and I don’t get to race in the wet very often,” Fothergill said.

“When I got off the plane in Rockhampton I just about wanted to kiss the ground.”

With a new kart, courtesy of Remo, Fothergill was keen to test the machine in the week following his Pro Lite national win at the CIK Stars of Karting Series, but was unable to due to wet weather.

“If we had have known it was going to rain all weekend, we would have gotten out on the track,” he said.

Fothergill first competed in the leopard class and finished third overall.

“We had to change the kart and put on wet weather tyres, but I was pretty pleased where I finished,” he said.

This was a return to an event he raced in three years ago.

Racing in the clubman category in the Monaco kart, Fothergill was pleased with the kart’s exceptional speed on his first day of practice.

“We were getting some really strong pace and ended up qualifying pole on Saturday,” Fothergill said.

“I was really happy with how the kart went and wasn’t too concerned with the position I finished.”

He still managed to be the highest placing Queenslander in the field, which included some of the best karters from Victoria.

A return is likely in 2011 for Fothergill, who will compete in the upcoming Round Five SuperCheap series in Gladstone.

“I definitely say I’ll be there.”
