GLADSTONE karter Cian Fothergill could hold the national title after the final round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series at Melbourne's Todd Road circuit this weekend.

Fothergill leads the Pro-Light KF1 championship by 39 points, and a win on Sunday will guarantee him the title.

The Fothergill camp is as confident as it can be, and will be out to ensure there are no mistakes made during the final round.

One prize for the winner is a spot in the World Cup/Asia Pacific Championship event at Suzuka in Japan next year, as well as the James Courtney Trophy, in recognition of Courtney's pair of World Championship victories in 1995 and 1997.

Fothergill has enjoyed an excellent series, with the only hiccup coming in the last round at Eastern Creek Raceway. Oversteer issues were difficult to overcome, and tyre dramas also had a detrimental effect on his racing. Things finally got back on track, but a snapped chain while he was leading the last race put paid to any comeback.

Johnny Grother, fresh off his TAG 125 enduro win with Matty Rayment, has his sights set on a third place finish in the championship after a series he described as disastrous.

Grother used a sister kart at the enduro, but believes some of remedies found during the event can be transferred to his series kart.

The Todd Road circuit is a technical track and has undergone an upgrade of late, Grother said.

With a chance to end up in the winner's circle, he will be happy to deal with whatever comes his way.

Fothergill will remain in Melbourne to try his luck in the Clubman Light at the City Of Melbourne Championships at the same venue, Todd Road circuit, on August 14 and 15.

He will also compete in the Leopard Light category.
