JEFF Taylor, Gladstone-based superheavy-weight boxer, has his eye on a Commonwealth Games berth.

Gladstone Amateur Boxing Club trainer Mick Daly said Taylor is in Cuba for eight weeks, and selection will come down to the last man standing at the training camp.

“He’s a big chance to make it, as he’ll only improve,” Daly said.

Taylor recently fought in Alice Springs, and defeated his Irish opponent in a victory which wouldn’t make a highlight reel.

“He told me he did enough to win, and to win any international fight is a good effort,” Daly said.

Taylor injured his elbow in the bout, Daly said, but the big bloke toughed it out.

Over the weekend, Daly took four local lads to Bundaberg for a fight night, but only one was lucky enough to get in the ring.

Fifteen-year-old Brandon Auston fought in the 75kg division and was very impressive.

“He stopped the other fighter in the third round after putting him down in the second and third rounds,” Daly said.
