100 evacuated from Heron Island

MORE than 100 Heron Island Resort and research centre staff were evacuated yesterday on the second trip from the island in face of cyclone Ului.

Delaware North Marine Division General Manager David Bennett oversaw the evacuation.

“Evacuations are all done. It was a bit rough out there,” he said referring to the boat trip from the island to the mainland.

He said a skeleton staff would remain at the resort and they would play “the watching game” to see if they need to use the helicopter to bring the staff out.

Water police Constable CJ Findlay who accompanied the staff on the ferry from the island said the trip was a bit rough and quite a few of the staff were sea sick.

The 110 evacuated staff will stay in Gladstone hotels until they get the all-clear to return to the island.

Acting Police Inspector Julia Cook said they were still waiting to see if guests and staff on Lady Elliot Island needed to be evacuated.

“With the cyclone weakening they are accessing the evacuation need,” she said.

She said because the island was only accessible by air they didn’t need to evacuate as early as the other islands.

“We will monitor the weather hour by hour.”

Self-evacuations were also conducted from Great Keppel Island yesterday afternoon.
