AN office that opened in Gladstone on Friday will provide a union organiser a place to do enterprise bargaining agreements, among other things.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union opened its doors, for what is believed to be a first for the union in Gladstone, to an official office at 1/38 Tank Street.
AMWU organiser Phil Golby said he had been pushing for an office since he started in his role in 2006 and it would service more than 1700 members in the Gladstone region.
“As far as I know, it’s the first time we’ve had one here,” he said.
Mr Golby said local issues included enterprise bargaining agreements, classification of workers at sites and unfair dismissal.
“The reason why we’ve opened one here in Gladstone is because of the amount of members that we have in the area and the need to service them better,” he said.
“It gives us a place to meet and a place to work from.”
Mr Golby said there would only be himself working in the office for the time being, until the union’s system was set up.
“It’s good to work from an office in town rather than in the back room at home,” he said.
