A DRIVER narrowly avoided smashing into traffic lights after being involved in an accident at 7.35am yesterday.
A 38-year-old female was driving a Holden Astra when the accident occurred at the Breslin Street and Glenlyon Road intersection.
She was trapped in the car and eventually freed by QFRS personnel before being taken to Gladstone Hospital.
The female sustained minor head injuries in the accident.
A Holden Commodore, driven by a 43-year-old man, was also involved in the accident.
Bruce Williams had been driving directly behind the Holden Commodore.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it happen,” Mr Williams said.
“I don’t know how she (the Astra driver) managed to avoid the traffic lights on the corner.”
Mr Williams, a former rural fire brigade member, placed the call to emergency services.
“The ambos were there within five minutes,” he said.
Checking the driver, Mr Williams said she was “dazed” and couldn’t remember what had happened.
“The airbags deployed and this stopped her head smashing into the steering wheel or the dash,” Mr Williams said.
“It could have been a lot worse.”
Several other passers-by came to assist the injured woman, Mr Williams said.
“I just did what anyone else would have done,” he said.
Both cars were towed from the scene with major front-end damage.
Police investigations into the accident are continuing.
