Owners to retain Kahunas' essence
New owners of iconic beachside Agnes Water restaurant and bar Kahunas, Dean and Bernadette Kerr.
THE big Kahunas in surfspeak are the top dogs, the leaders, and Agnes Water's iconic surf-themed bar and grill of the same name, has been the top spot for a beer and a pizza for a number of years on The Discovery Coast.
And new owners Dean and Bernadette Kerr don't want to mess with the surf theme or family atmosphere - just give Kahunas a bit of a face-lift and revamp the menu slightly.
“We don't want to change too much. It works and people like the family atmosphere,” Dean said.
“They can come here, have a nice meal and a beer and it is not too expensive for the whole family.”
Dean is fairly new to the area and has fallen in love with the laid-back coastal/ country lifestyle and “beautiful weather” introduced to him by wife Bernadette, who grew up with Agnes.
“I used to come here all the time as a kid,” she said.
“I went to school in Bundaberg and my parents had a beach shack here. Dad built some of the first houses in Agnes.”
Bernadette and Dean met in England, came back to Sydney and lived the fast lifestyle with good jobs and incomes, but also with all the stresses and strains of family life in a big city.
Bernadette then introduced Dean to her old stomping grounds and they fell in love with the area, all over again for her, and as a family.
Their son has settled at the local school and they have decided to make Agnes their home and Kahunas Pizza, Bar & Grill their next challenge.
“I think the surf theme works,” said Bernadette.
“We are changing a bit of the old furniture, putting in new lighting, but basically it will appear pretty much the same.
“And we are making subtle changes to the menu, introducing a bit more fresh produce and opening for breakfast at the weekend as well.”
The Kerrs will continue with theme nights at Kahunas and have plans of introducing a courtesy bus for patrons - but its focus will remain as a family friendly good-value eatery.
