Two die as ute hits school fence

TWO people are dead after a ute caught fire after crashing through the fence of a state school in Gladstone.

Police are investigating the double fatality which occurred at the intersection of Gladstone Benaraby Rd and French Rd about 1.30am (AEST) on Saturday.

The heat from the flames prevented police from approaching the ute, which crashed through a fence at Toolooa State High School.

Police say it may be some time before they can identify the people who died inside the burnt-out ute.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
