A few good men needed

VALLEYS Rugby League Club is hoping some fresh blood will be able to help reinvigorate it.

Jordy Dunnett, 6, Alex Wilson, 7, and their Valleys team mates are the futures of the club, but where is the present?

VALLEYS Rugby League Club is hoping some fresh blood will be able to help reinvigorate it.

Long established within the Gladstone rugby league community and with the largest junior numbers in Central Queensland, Valleys have struggled in recent years in the senior ranks.

This trouble culminated in the merger with Wallabys Rugby League club in order to take part in this year's Challenge Cup competition.

Valleys senior president Mark Dunnett said the club was looking for more people to help to ensure the juniors had a side to progress to.

“We want to ensure the future of our young players,” Dunnett said.

“We're going to have to pay for our own bus and insurance next year, and with limited revenue, we need to get to the stage where we can have games.”

Valleys are prevented from hosting home games as their fields are too close to the club house.

It's not just a simple matter of moving the field across as the light posts on the other side would then be too close.

Dunnett said the club had few options, either move the clubhouse or move the lights and they were exploring both options, and hoped someone could help.

Field troubles aside, the Valleys president said he wanted to find more volunteers to bring in fresh ideas.

“We want to encourage parents to step forward so there is a future for them here," he said.

The president encouraged former players and people who could no longer play to get involved. Dunnett said the club wanted to return to the Challenge Cup competition on its own and felt the club owed its juniors.

“We have a duty to our juniors to have a path for them to carry on," Dunnett said.

"My own son Jordy, who has started in U6 this year, I'd like him to play for Valleys right through.”
