POLICE are hunting an arsonist who stole a light truck from a Gladstone rental company in the early hours of yesterday, before torching the vehicle and trying to push the blazing wreck into Auckland Creek.

Emergency services were called to the scene after a police patrol discovered the burning Hino truck on the banks of Auckland Creek on Chapple Street, between Hildebrand Street and Palm Drive.

It had previously been stolen from Tintmaster on Hanson Road.

Sergeant Kevin Pittendreigh, of the Gladstone Scenes of Crime, was on the scene yesterday investigating tyre tread and other evidence, before the burnt truck was pulled out by a salvage truck.

Sergeant Pittendreigh said the police patrol had found the truck burning about 4.30am, with Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Gladstone called to the scene.

A QFRS spokesperson said the truck had been well-alight when they arrived, with fire crews taking about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Gladstone detective Wayne Butcher said police would like to speak to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious vehicles or behaviour in the Hanson Road or Chapple Street areas between the hours of 3am and 4.30am yesterday.

He did not wish to comment further, due to the ongoing investigation into the theft and arson.

Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
