WOLVES soccer club president Brian Niven said the game between the Cougars and North Queensland Razorbacks was the biggest thing to ever happen for soccer in the region.
The QSL championship match is to be held on the Wolves ground on May 23.
It is the first QSL points game that has been held in Gladstone and is a huge deal for the community, Niven said.
“It's the biggest game Gladstone has ever seen,” he said.
Niven said being able to see a high-quality QSL competition game without travelling was a huge opportunity.
The game is to be televised and will be Gladstone's chance to show their support for the game, he said.
The Wolves club has worked tirelessly to secure the town's first QSL game and this has meant lots of work to get the facilities to standard.
The changing rooms needed renovating, a new canteen and shed built, plus fences erected to show they could control the crowd.
We wouldn't see change from $50,000 for the shed/canteen alone, Niven said.
“It is certainly not a money-making venture ... but the good thing being that the facilities will be there for our future,” he said.
Niven said that the event was being taken seriously by Gladstone soccer who have kindly rescheduled senior football from Saturday so that all could attend the game, which starts at 7.30pm.
“There will be other features to the big day which will be announced in coming week,” Niven said.
“We are going to make the day a real event,” he said.
The Razorbacks are ranked in the top three of the QSL competition with Cougars mid field.
Cougars will be considering the match as a home game. They have held two pre-season matches in Gladstone as they look to strengthen their ties with the town.
