Reg backs 'no-brainer' CQ NRL bid

RUGBY League identity and Footy Show legend Reg Reagan is the latest to throw his weight - beer gut included - behind the CQ NRL bid.

Reg told The Observer yesterday that bringing an NRL team to the region was a “no-brainer”.

“The three Queensland sides are booming right now right up north and down south, so we need one smack bang in the middle,” he said.

“There is a big junior base here as well.”

Speaking from Beef Australia in Rockhampton, Reg said he was convinced that there was enough support to warrant a team.

“Mate, I come here every so often to catch up with a few old girlfriends, so I've noticed the support for Rugby League in the area,” he said.

“People have been all over me like a cheap suit since I got here and if I reflect the game of rugby league, then I reckon there's more than enough support for a local team.”

In fact, Reg was quick to talk up Gladstone as well.

“I've been meaning to come to Gladstone to check out your coal port,” he said.

“I'm from the Hunter Valley myself, so I like to get down and dirty with that sort of thing.”

Reg said he'd been called in to Rockhampton as an ambassador for the bid, meaning a lot of the decision rested upon his verdict.

“The CQ bid success or failure is pretty much up to me and, mate, I've only been here about five minutes and I've already given it a big thumbs up,” he said.

Although a big supporter of the CQ bid, Reg also admitted he would like to see a team enter the NRL from the New South Wales central coast during the 2013 expansion year as well.
