THE barricades in Goondoon Street came down temporarily for the Library Square markets on Saturday but council is confident they will come down permanently well before Christmas.
Gladstone Regional Council director of infrastructure services Ross Paroz said council had hoped to be able to lay the tiles on the new cement in the middle of the road a bit sooner and finish the work a little earlier than scheduled.
However the tile manufacturers recommended that the cement be allowed to cure longer before the tiles were laid.
Mr Paroz said the original tiles were slipping and breaking because the sand they were bedded in began shifting with the rain and the operations of the street cleaner.
He said the new tiles would be firmly attached to the new cement base.
The work involved laying new footpaths from Library Square to Roseberry Street on each side of Goondoon Street.
The plans for the precinct include the creation of a public space on the corner of Goondoon and Roseberry Streets.
The Library Square project is part of a greater strategy for the Gladstone CBD which includes a 'Harbour Arbor' shade structure from Rosebery Street to Auckland Creek and the redevelopment of the Auckland Creek area from the Sailing Club to Auckland Point.
The footpath resurfacing was paid for from the state government funding for the construction of the second deck on the Entertainment Centre car park.
