Tannum teens get out of hand

TANNUM Sands police are asking parents to keep a tighter reign on their children after six youths were arrested at a 16th birthday party that got out of hand on Friday night.

Sergeant John Meiers said police were repeatedly called to a home in Blackwell Street after complaints of noise, fighting and alcohol related offences.

Calls started from 8.30pm and the party was finally closed down just after 10pm.

"Officers from Tannum attended and a couple of crews from Gladstone were called in to assist,'' Sgt Meiers said.

"One juvenile and five teenagers above the age of 17 were arrested, mainly for street type offences, public nuisance and disobeying directions.''

Sgt Meiers said lack of parental supervision and alcohol had fuelled many of the problems.

"This was a registered party but there was no real supervision,'' he said.

"A couple of 16-year-old kids were trying to run it but the party had grown to such an extent it got out of hand.

"Alcohol was present and was being consumed by a lot of the patrons.''

Sgt Meiers said the incidence of parties spiralling out of control in the Boyne Tannum area seemed to come in runs.

"Parents are a little bit naive these days,'' Sgt Meiers said.

"They think their kids won't drink but a lot of young people under the age of 18 are affected by alcohol.''

Sgt Meiers said the aftermath of the party continued in other locations through the night.

"There were disturbances in Pacific Avenue later that night with young people hanging around causing fights and arguments.''

Officer-in-charge of Tannum police, Senior Sergeant Toni Poli, said local people had a right to live in a safe and quiet community.

"There has been a big increase in reports of alcohol-related disturbances around the town,'' Snr Sgt Poli said.

"With the warmer weather we are getting more calls about alcohol-related matters.

"It's a small element involved in what may seem like harmless fun, causing a bit of a problem.

"We're asking parents of teenagers to be 100% sure of where their kids are on Friday and Saturday nights.

"It's a big problem,'' he said.

"Parents should know where their kids are.''
