Magistrate to crim: Don't call me mate unless you want jail

CALLING a magistrate "mate" is not likely to do a lot of good, as Roman James Ross found out.

Magistrate Mark Morrow sentenced Ross to seven months probation after he pleaded guilty to theft of a car stereo and other accessories from Super Cheap Auto.

Police prosecutor Merrilyn Hoskins told the court that on March 8, Ross and three accomplices had gone into Super Cheap Auto.

Ross had picked up a box containing the stereo and the four moved to an empty aisle where Ross removed the stereo from its box and stuffed it into his shorts.

The stereo was later returned but the other accessories were not found.

MORE COURT REPORTS:

>> Using mum's debit card almost lands woman in jail

>> Man released after assault, ignoring domestic violence order

>> Thief stole dog food because mate was too scared

While Mr Morrow was explaining the conditions associated with the probation, he noticed Ross rolling his eyes.

"Don't roll your eyes!" the magistrate barked.

"Grow up!"

After explaining the nature of the probation, Mr Morrow asked Ross if he understood, and if he was satisfied with the sentence.

"Yes mate," Ross replied, to which Mr Morrow said, "Don't test me. I know of a young man who called the magistrate mate and he received 14 days in jail."

No conviction was recorded.
