Time with World Cup players will improve Capras captain

THE Rugby League World Cup has delivered what many thought of as the inevitable, a match up between Australia and New Zealand to end the tournament.

The feeling within rugby league circles is that the whole show is a farce, injuring top players while only three teams - the finalists and England - ever had any chance of winning.

Despite that fact, there is much more to gain for the sport worldwide than is to lose, especially for someone like Gavin Hiscox.

The Capras captain ventured off with the Italian national side, and despite not being able to force his way into the team for any of the Azzurri's three matches, gained a wealth of experience from players like the Minichiello brothers and Kade Snowden.

Capras operations manager Walson Carlos knows just how much the trip and experience is going to help Hiscox.

"In terms of the opportunity it provided Gavin, who hadn't played for his country before, it is outstanding and he will come back better," Carlos said.

"To spend that time with the calibre of players he has will help him with his captaincy."

While Hiscox has arrived back at his day job as a carpenter and will watch the final from the living room, the event has provided a richness he would not have found anywhere else.

That is what Carlos believes the World Cup is all about.

"We are dominant now but it hasn't always been that way. The players appreciate the opportunity to play for their countries and are not putting their hands up to stop the match; they like playing against the world's best," Carlos said.
