'UNREAL': Paddler videos moment whale swims under his board

SAM Hinde had the experience of his life at Kawana this morning, catching on camera a whale swimming under his stand up paddle board and others blowing metres away.

He wasn't the only one to have intimate encounters with migrating whales on the Sunshine Coast today.

Photographer Jodie Price captured a magical scene showing paddles and whales enjoying the ocean together at Mudjimba.

For Sam the moment was too good to miss.

"I couldn't believe my eyes to get so close and to have one swim under me was insane," he said.

"So stoked.

"I've never seen whales close up and always wanted to. I went down to check the surf early this morning at Kawana Beach and saw two of them playing about 200m out so I decided to jump on my SUP.

"... they just swam around me continuing to play; It was unreal."

Whale of a time for paddlers at Sunshine Coast beach

SINGER-SONGWRITER Ziggy Alberts' Thursday morning paddle to Old Woman Island will be forever seared in his memory, if not recorded in song, after photographer Jodie Price captured this stunning contact with nature off Mudjimba Beach.

Alberts and his paddle partner came up close and personal with this calf following its mum popped up in front of them.

Jodie, a Pacific Paradise State School teacher's aid, said she had been in the right place at the right time.

Truth is she is up early every morning to go down to the beach from her Mudjimba home, camera always at the ready.

This year's whale season, she says, has been exceptional.

"I reckon last year I saw a couple but the past two days have been unreal,'' Jodie said.

"I was at Coolum the other day with my husband and saw a mother and calf there as well.

"The water this morning was so clear it was just perfect. There were a few out behind the island but these two came in near to the shark nets and just took their time moving past."

Jodie puts out a calendar every year mainly of Mudjimba Beach scenes. Taking photos is something she loves and is why her camera travels with her where ever she goes.

"I go down every morning. The island always makes such a perfect picture whatever the weather."

The mother and calf continued on down the north shore beach coming within 100 metres of the beach at popular surf break Redgate.

Surfers Joe Hoffman and his mate Will Vale said the whales came within 50 metres of them and were unhurried as they continued their migration journey south from Hervey Bay.
