"Lonely hearts bandit" received stolen property

Beau Bartlett is still wanted by NSW Police.
Beau Bartlett is still wanted by NSW Police.

BEAU Robert Bartlett dubbed the "lonely hearts bandit" mysteriously ended up with a Holden ute and mobile phone stolen from a Gladstone woman in a frightening armed robbery.

The woman was tied up in her home by a knife wielding man who was disguised during the robbery nearly 12 months ago.

Bartlett, 33, was originally charged with the February 28 robbery and depriving the woman of her liberty, and was to stand trial, however, the police charges were withdrawn and dismissed.

The offender remains a mystery.

Bartlett, who is still wanted by NSW Police as a named suspect in robbery offences that targeted people including a man seeking love on 'lonely hearts' advertisements, was sentenced yesterday over two Queensland crimes including a $48,000 robbery.

Bartlett pleaded guilty in the District Court at Gladstone to break, enter and stealing $48,000 from a Victoria Point business on January 22 last year; and receiving stolen property at Telina between February 27 and March 28 last year.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Hynes said the Holden Maloo ute and phone found with Bartlett belonged to the Gladstone woman, stolen after she was tied with cable ties and tape at 3am on February 28. Bartlett told police he had been contacted by a mate to hold on to the ute and was paid $500 to do so.

He gave police no names.

Mr Hynes said Bartlett removed the safe with over $5000 cash, stole the CCTV security system and other items in the robbery at Victoria Point in which keys had been given to him in a pub by an unnamed man.

"I'm supposed to accept that some unknown man gave him the keys to the pub," Judge Brendan Butler SC queried.

And he told Bartlett, whoever did the robbery of the woman "is facilitated by people like you who are prepared to receive stolen property".

Bartlett was sentenced to 18 months jail for the robbery and 12 months for having stolen property.

With his 313 days (10 months) in custody, Judge Butler ordered the remainder of the sentence suspended for two and a half years. Bartlett's "freedom" is to be short lived though as he will likely be arrested on warrant with a NSW extradition application made to the court.
