STRESSED and anxious, self-confessed drug user Phillip Clarke had been driving back to Central Queensland after buying "weed" in the notorious northern NSW village of Nimbin, to resell and pay off debts.

Clarke, 34,  told police, who stopped him at Turkey Beach on Friday, it was "an act of desperation" to pay debt.

Prosecutor Snr const Sam Pyke said police received a phone call from a person alleging a silver Commodore was travelling north on the Bruce Highway with $10,000 worth of drugs inside.

A police search of the car revealed two plastic bags hidden inside a pillowcase that held over 300g of cannabis, a cannabis cream, and drug utensils.

Clarke pleaded guilty before Gladstone magistrate Mark Morrow to possession and supply of the drug.

Clarke told police he drove to Nimbin from his North Mackay home and paid $1500 for the drugs that he hoped to resell and make $1000 profit.

"It's two packs of hydroponic weed from Nimbin... eight ounces of C-grade bush," Clarke told police in a recorded interview.

The drug offender then went on to explain how it was graded according to quality and potency before regaling drug investigation officers about the delights of the Nimbin's "Mardi Grass" annual celebration and parade.

After listening to the interview Mr Morrow intervened and ordered the case be adjourned to allow Clarke to have a mental health assessment.
