Fisherman finds touching message in a bottle for Grandad

Campbell Gellie

BILL Ives was touched when he found a glass jar floating in Gladstone Marina with a letter written, he thinks, by a grandchild to their deceased grandfather.

A great great grandfather himself, Mr Ives was opening the Volunteer Marine Rescue headquarters when he saw a coffee jar floating near the boat ramp.

"Being a grandfather and seeing how the little person had thought and missed her grandfather was very touching," he said.

He said he thought the message in a bottle had only been in the water a couple of days. The letter was stamped 8.10.15.

The message reads:

"Wow! 3 months have passed already. It's gone way too fast! Feels like yesterday I was sitting at your beside sharing stories and sharing what is going on for me in my life. The last 'I love you to the moon and back forever and always', the last hug. The last goodbye. It all happened way too fast. I know you told me to live every moment like it's my last and I will. I know you're in heaven smiling down but it's not the same. I'm so lucky to have a grandad like you in my life. I miss you like crazy! Until we meet again enjoy life up there and say hi to grandma for me."
