'Tornado' destroys boats at flood-hit Awoonga business

DESTRUCTIVE winds devastated the Lake Awoonga Boat Hire business on Monday night.

Owners Michelle and Ross Pearce said a 'mini tornado' ripped through Lake Awoonga around 7pm, damaging two of their prime house boats.

Mr Pearce said the 43-foot Barra Queen, worth $200,000, appeared to have been written off.

"The storm blew holes in all the walls, which has resulted in the whole kitchen being dismantled," Mr Pearce.

"That includes the plumbing and the electrical work."

Suncorp advises everyone to play it safe this storm season

Mr Pearce said two of the company's house boats were in the process of being repaired after being damaged in the January floods.

The boats were expected to be repaired and ready to use this month.

"It was horrendous, absolutely horrendous," Mrs Pearce said. "We have not been able to rent out a house boat since January," she said.

"Repair work by our insurance company did not start until a couple of months ago and would have been finalised within two weeks."
