Police told stranger gave man Viagra pills

BUSTED with a handful of Viagra pills, Alexander Stamatov told Calliope police "a bloke" who he did not know gave them to him.

Stamatov, 29, pleaded guilty before Gladstone Magistrates Court to unlawful possession of controlled drugs at west Gladstone. He was convicted and fined $800.

Prosecutor Sgt Merrilyn Hoskins said Calliope police stopped a car Stamatov was a passenger in just after midnight on May 30.

Officers did checks after getting information about drug matters from intelligence held in the police system.

Sgt Hoskins said Stamatov was with another man and both had been detained.

During 'a pat down search' police asked if he had any drugs and Stamatov handed them four blue pills from a pocket of his trousers.

"He said they were Viagra and given to him by a bloke he met recently," she told the court.

Defence lawyer Jun Pepito said Stamatov was given the pills at a party.

Mr Pepito said Stamatov declined to use the Viagra pills and realised he should have then disposed of them.

Magistrate Penelope Hay questioned the lawfulness of the search on the information before the court.

However, she noted Stamatov had a history similar offending and accumulated drug related offences including some last year.

"You have again been found in possession of drugs when you should not have," Ms Hay said. "It has started to become a problem for you Mr Stamatov."

She warned him that more offending could mean jail time.
