THIS week we talk about fishing with Callan Mercer, who recently caught two squids at his secret spot.

Name: Callan Mercer.

Age: 20.

What have you got there? I've got two squids, I caught them at a secret spot near Facing Island.

I go there once a fortnight. It's the first time I've ever caught a squid.

What did you catch it with? I caught it with a squid jigg.

We were using lures and we saw the squid trying to attack our lures so we swapped it for a squid jigg.

Did you eat i t? My friend Aiden Heit and I caught six squids that day so it fed about eight of us.

We had it grilled. It was really nice.

Was there much fight? They was, surprisingly; they're quite big.

How often do you go fishing? I go three times a week, I fish in estuaries around Gladstone.

Who taught you how to fish? My dad Scott Mercer. He taught me when I was really little in Weipa.

I used to go fishing a lot with him when we lived there. One of my most memorable catches was a 37cm bream.

I used my pop's secret dough that he makes for bream fishing.

Another one would be a barramundi in the Benaraby river, it was 108cm.

Boat or off the bank? I actually prefer to fish off the bank. It's easier for when you're fishing in estuaries.

Lures or bait? Lures, but if the fish aren't biting I use bait, usually I'll use prawns.
