Stomach virus spreads causes vomiting, diarrhoea

A SEVERE stomach virus is infecting people around the region, causing vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.

Health professionals are urging residents to wash their hands and be vigilant as it continues to make people sick.

House Call Doctor service CEO Wayne Ormond said they had treated more than 50 people with the virus.

He said it started before Christmas.

"We saw a similar virus in Hervey Bay and Maryborough about six to eight weeks ago so that's probably the same one," he said.

They treated patients in Gladstone, Calliope and Boyne Island and Tannum Sands.

He said children being on school holidays was a bonus, as it is very contagious.

"We don't realise that we don't wash our hands enough … if someone in the household has it then you need to be extra vigilant because it's highly contagious.

"Fortunately school is out at the moment which is a blessing because these types of viruses spread like wild fire."

The virus is spread by human contact and he said the best prevention is to wash your hands.

Mr Ormond recommended seeing your regular GP, rather than going to the emergency department for treatment.
