THE thought of sailing never crossed Ryan Shayler Rouvray's mind - until he heard of Sailors with Disabilities.

The 17-year-old Gladstone State High School student has an intellectual disability.

He was one of 22 aboard Wednesday morning's trip with the Sydney-based organisation.

"I was sailing the yacht, and we had to get the yacht sail up straight with the right wind - it was really fun," he said.

Ryan hadn't heard of the organisation until the school called for people to show their interest in climbing aboard.

"I never thought of sailing before - I actually thought I was going to get sea sick, because I've never been that far out before," he said.

The 16.2m yacht will be in Gladstone until Friday, taking groups on sailing trips morning and afternoon.
