Ball of light may have been a meteorite, professor says

A UNIVERSITY professor believes the ball of light that lit up the sky across central Queensland earlier this month was most likely a meteorite.

The ABC reports Professor Phil Bland, from Curtin University in Western Australia, says the fireball which was spotted by residents across the region on May 15 may have been a meteorite that probably weighed about 100kg.

It would have been travelling at a speed of four kilometres per second when it hit the ground.

Amateur astronomer David Finley is working under the guidance of Curtin University to try and locate the meteorite.

Mr Finley is gathering eye-witness accounts and photographs, and is hoping to access CCTV footage.

He estimates the meteorite landed in Jericho in western Queensland.

Reports of the large object lighting up the sky and hitting the earth flooded Facebook after the event.

There were reports of the meteorite and a bright flash being seen in Gladstone, Rockhampton, Emerald, Barcaldine and Moranbah.

However, an astronomer from Wappa Falls Observatory on the Sunshine Coast suggested at the time the object was not a meteorite, but more likely part of a satellite re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.
