Science student seeks funding
SCIENCE mad Jack Hales is on a mission - to raise $10,000 by December.
Six weeks before jetting off to Canada last month, the Boyne Island teenager was having trouble raising the cash to pay for his 20-day trip to take part in the Canada Wide Science Fair.
So he went on a hunt for keen investors and managed to scrape together $5000 before leaving.
Now he has to pay off the rest of the bill.
Canadian students who are taking part in a similar international exchange program do not have to pay for their living expenses.
After approaching Rotary clubs for small donations, he is now trying his luck with the mining companies.
"Most have rejected my application because they can't hand out funds to people; they have to donate to organisations," he said.
Jack said he would look at spending the money he received from a Youth Development Program scholarship to pay for the shortfall.
