Ring road wait over

THE wait is over for drivers keen to try out Gladstone's newest piece of tarmac.

The full length of Kirkwood Rd is open for use by light vehicles after traffic lights were switched on yesterday.

The newly opened stretch of road connects Glenlyon Rd to Gladstone-Benaraby Rd, near Toolooa Bends.

Gladstone Regional Council's director of infrastructure services Paul Keech said Kirkwood Rd would be open to light vehicles but would not immediately be accessible to B-double trucks.

"Kirkwood Rd is in the process of being registered as a B-double route," he said.

"The road will initially be used by general traffic and it is anticipated to open for B-double use late next week.

"Today's switching on of traffic lights at the intersection signals the operation of the much-anticipated city ring road."
