12 beers and spirits came before crash

NICHOLAS Craig Kirkwood was three times over the legal alcohol limit to drive - his bad decision ended in him crashing his vehicle.

Kirkwood, 27, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to driving under the influence of alcohol in South Gladstone on January 17, a reading of 0.157; and driving unlicensed (SPER Suspension).

Police prosecutor Gavin Reece said Kirkwood had a traffic crash on Auckland St at 5.30am Sunday.

He told officers he had about 12 beers and post mix alcoholic spirits that previous night.

"He says the last drink was 20 minutes before driving. He believed then he was over the legal limit," Mr Reece said.

Kirkwood's licence had been suspended on November 13 last year by SPER and he admitted he knew that.

Lawyer Jun Pepito said Kirkwood's drinking friend had wanted him to show his vehicle and as a result the pair had an accident - the vehicle written-off.

Mr Pepito said Kirkwood realises now that with his previous history if he offends again he would likely go to jail.

Magistrate Penelope Hay fined him $1200 and disqualified his licence for 12 months.

Kirkwood had still not paid his SPER debt and his suspension was still operable.
