New projects will fill gap left by LNG construction: GAPDL

WITH Gladstone's current and future projects totalling nearly $89 billion, the town's promotional board is throwing out the words doom and gloom.

They say that Gladstone's natural buoyancy may show a decrease in some jobs with major constructions finishing, but other areas will increase with new projects and developments.

Major industry, infrastructure, commercial and community projects completed and at their earlier stages have been outlined in the Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited Major Project Status Report.

The report shows the state of play of current, planned and anticipated growth development within the region.

More than $420 million of projects has been completed, with $68 billion in projects under construction.

GAPDL chief executive Glenn Churchill said some sectors would begin to lose jobs while others were growing.

"We're seeing a change of so many aspects of the industry, and construction always comes to an end at some stage," he said.

"While some people want to paint doom and gloom, history shows that Gladstone has always had a buoyant economy...it's about transitioning and transferring skills."

He said the report helped the region know and understand the potential for the future.

LNG Limited, Arrow LNG and Boulder Steel Ltd were all listed as being under the study stage.

Projects committed:

  • Gladstone Pacific Nickel Limited processing plant, US$3.65 billion, two year delay.
  • Origin Energy gas field, $260 million.
  • GRC Boyne Tannum Sports Precinct, $15 million, seeking funding.
  • WICET and GPC East Shores Project, $45 million, construction has begun.
  • Northern Oil Refineries, $30 million, earthworks started.
