GLADSTONE was labelled Australia's "pre-eminent industrial city" in Queensland Parliament today.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney also said Gladstone now ranked as an industrial centre "on the world stage".

He pointed to Gladstone's Boyne Island Aluminium smelter as by far the nation's biggest and Queensland Alumina's Gladstone plant the second biggest.

Mr Seeney said the expansion of the Yarwun refinery would place it among the top four plants in the country.

"For decades, these have formed a powerful industrial base for Queensland," he said.

Mr Seeney then used the praise to beat the carbon tax drum again, a regular during parliament in the past few months.

"It is the hugely productive regions of Queensland that are going to be hit hardest by Labor's new carbon tax," he said.
