NURSING student Kara Quinn lives in "the middle of nowhere", about halfway between Biloela and Calliope.

And while studying a Diploma of Nursing by correspondence was a priority for the busy mum, it was also her only option.

Gladstone Hospital has plans to become a training hub for doctors

This year Kara chose to study nursing at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE because Gladstone institutes didn't offer an on-site course.

CQUniversity and CQ TAFE Gladstone campuses do not offer any on-site nursing courses.

With CQUniversity in Rockhampton a 170km drive away, and kids in tow, Kara said she was happy with her decision.

"I really like the hands-on experience I get from this course," Kara said. "The only downside is not having the teachers to speak to in person."

The mum-of-two also visits the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE for practical classes throughout the semester.

"It's something I've always wanted to do," she said.

Kara said that if Central Queensland tertiary institutes offered on-campus courses, students would enrol.

She will be a qualified endorsed enrolled nurse at the end of her studies.
