Name change and rebrand in the wind for CQ University

TWO new names are under consideration for CQ University.

The Australian has reported the university has registered the names Australian National Regional University and National Regional University of Australia with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

CQUniversity Vice Chancellor Scott Bowman flagged with staff late last month that a name change and rebrand were under consideration, but did not provide further details.

The Australian said a search of the ASIC database revealed the two names, which would dramatically change the flavour of the regional Queensland institution.

Prof Bowman told The Observer's sister paper, The Morning Bulletin, there was nothing to announce for the time being.

"A formal name change has been mooted for many years, given the university's extraordinary growth beyond the boundaries of central Queensland," he said.

"Indeed, almost 75% of our tertiary students and 15 of our 24 campus/study sites are now based outside of central Queensland.

"From time to time the name change idea comes up for discussion by university management. CQUniversity will continue its ongoing considerations of this prospect as it has over the years."

Prof Bowman said if the idea were acted upon, consultations would happen with students, staff and stakeholders about how a change of name best respected and preserved the proud central Queensland heritage and operating base.
