UPDATE: Man charged over street brawl at Barney Point

A man has been charged following investigations into an incident at Gladstone in which a man was injured.

Police will allege an altercation between two groups occurred on Barney St around 11.40am during which the victim was slashed on the arm and stabbed in the chest by a man armed with a knife.

Police are now saying they believe the victim then ran off with the other man allegedly in pursuit before he was able to hide.

The victim, a 47-year-old Barney Point man, was airlifted to the Rockhampton Base Hospital. Last reports from the hospital were that the man was in a stable condition.

A 45-year-old Targinnie man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and affray and is expected to appear at the Gladstone Magistrates Court tomorrow, January 25.

THE witness who arrived moments after the crash, but whose friend saw it, described how the driver "spun the wheels" and hit a fence in Barney Point.

The car was leaving the scene of an eight person brawl that has left a man fighting for his life with stab wounds.

She said she was told by a woman who knew those involved in the fight that it was "over a packet of smokes".

"They reversed out of the driveway, spun the wheels, lost control, hit the brick mailbox on the rental house, and then [ran] into the old couples fence," she said.

"When they hit the fence, the log went straight into the windscreen."

A WITNESS to the aftermath of the car crash said an eight person brawl that erupted in the streets of Barney Point was over "smokes apparently".

The witness, who gave a statement to police, arrived moments after the car crash.

She said a woman ran out to the crashed car and it looked like they were "close friends".

"When we pulled up she was heading over to the car, and then the driver and passenger went back to the house and sat down."

Earlier 3.19pm:

Sergeant Wayne Butcher has said there were up to 8 people involved in the fight.

The fight started about 11.10am on Barney St, he said, before it moved into a side street where one of the men involved was stabbed with an unknown implement.

Two vehicles then left the scene before one of the cars crashed around the corner in Wood St, and the rest of the people fleeing on foot.

The man is thought to still be in a critical condition.
