'Lucky' teen in court

A TEENAGE driver who showed more respect for the magistrate than he had for his own safety behind the wheel was described as a lucky boy when he appeared in court on a driving charge.

Sonny Terrence Ware, 17, referred to Magistrate Russell Warfield as "Your Majesty" when he appeared yesterday charged with driving without due care.

The P-plater had nearly careered off a cliff in his LandCruiser ute on March 27 when he failed to take a hairpin turn into Harbour Tce off Yarroon St.

The vehicle flipped on to its roof and slid 15m, hitting the gutter and righting itself before going over the edge.

The ute crashed into trees, which stopped it from falling on to Flinders Pde below.

"It scared the hell out of me," Ware said. "It was an accident."

Mr Warfield interjected: "These things don't just happen. The word accident is used too loosely. It's not an accident, it's a crash."

Ware was fined $750 and disqualified for driving for one month.
