Gladstone dad desperate for job: 'I'd work on a s--- farm'

LUCAS Hall, like so many in town who may have to leave because there isn't any work, has fallen on tough times since riding the wave of the construction boom in Gladstone.

He bought a house and a few toys, settled down, got married and had two beautiful baby girls.

As a last-gasp effort he got a job flying in to Port Hedland for four weeks and flying back out to Gladstone for one week to see his young family.

"You're meant to be a big tough construction worker but it breaks your heart when you have to leave your kids," he said.

"FIFO is a single man's job."

But on Christmas Eve last year Lucas, a boilermaker by trade, was made redundant and since then he hasn't been able to find any work - apart from the $60 he picked up the other day after responding to an ad on Facebook to drop a fisherman off at the Toolooa Bends boat ramp.

"I've been to the recruitment agencies but they've got nothing," he said while feeding his month-old baby.

"The best answer I got was to hang on until Easter."

Lucas said he's on every job page on Facebook and as the president of Boyne Island Tannum Sands Cricket Club, he has put the call out to all of his mates to let him know as soon as any job comes up.

"I'd take anything," he said.

"I'd work on a s*** farm at the moment."

And is it any wonder Lucas would work anywhere when he's got bills to pay and over $600 a week in mortgage repayments.

Despite calls from his dad to sign up for the dole, Lucas has resisted so far and will probably sell his jet ski to make ends meet.

"We're in the negative," he said.

"I love being with my kids but unfortunately it doesn't pay anything," he said.

Having grown up in Gladstone and been involved in community sport and fundraising for years, Lucas has done a lot for the town he loves.
