Local driving school hit by fraudulent website

SAFETY FEARS: Melissa Mayers warns about a scam.
SAFETY FEARS: Melissa Mayers warns about a scam. Mike Richards

M&M driving school owner Melissa Mayers knows first-hand the damage online scammers can cause.

She was alerted to the identity theft of her business after a female student said she'd given her details and bank account number to a website.

At the time, M&M didn't have a website, operating from a mobile phone.

Ms Mayers said she felt immediately sick at the thought of unknown people picking up her students.

"I looked at the 'about section' and it was a photo of Justin Timberlake going by the name of John," she said.

"The first thing that popped into my mind was 'pedophile'.

"It's scary because it's one of those industries where you don't meet the instructor until you're in person."

Ms Mayers said the fraudulent website could be a scam for money, a way to access teenagers or her business opposition.

The incident has been reported to the Gladstone police and the cybercrime unit is investigating.
