Life not so rosy for woman who stole chocolates

LIFE is not always rosy or like a box of chocolates.

For one young Gladstone woman who stole a bag full of treats from her employer, it came with a day of reckoning.

Johanna Paulsen could not resist the temptation and fed her chocolate indulgence at her boss's expense - the big treat costing her job and a hefty $500 fine.

Paulsen, 20, pleaded guilty to stealing chocolates from her employer at Caltex Boyne River on April 4.

Gladstone Magistrates Court was told CCTV filmed Paulsen loading a plastic garbage bag full of chocolates into a car after finishing her late night work shift.

Prosecutor Sgt Merrilyn Hoskins said Paulsen had removed a box of chocolates and another 10 small chocolates into a garbage bag at the same time she put milk containers (that had passed their use-by date) into another plastic garbage bag.

Paulsen put the bag holding the milk containers into an industrial bin, and the bag with the chocolates went into a friend's car.

Defence lawyer Jun Pepito argued that Paulsen intended to pay later and had left an IOU note for her boss.

However, the note was not found, but Paulsen at the time said she was having a disagreement with another employee.

Magistrate Penelope Hay said Paulsen had been in a position of trust and she did not find her story plausible.

Ms Hay said she used the plastic garbage bag "as a ruse to evade detection".

Paulsen was fined $500 and ordered to pay restitution for the stolen chocolates.
