Brockovich to help local fishermen

COULD Julia Roberts' next Hollywood blockbuster be set in Central Queensland?

Roberts starred in the 2000 hit movie Erin Brockovich, the true story of an unemployed single mother who became a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brought down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply.

Since then the environmentalist and human rights activist has continued to make a difference.

And it now appears the film's subject could turn her attention to Gladstone.

A statement on the Environmental Justice Society website says the organisation is working in collaboration with Brockovich and Shine Lawyers to investigate water quality issues on behalf of fishermen in the Gladstone area who have been affected by the loss of marine life.

The statement was picked up by crikey.com.au.

The issue of water quality and marine life health has Gladstone fishermen at odds with the local ports corporation, which has publicly accused the fishermen of a campaign to link sick wildlife with dredging to gain compensation.

Yesterday a spokesman for Shine Lawyers said it was too early to comment at this stage but the company was investigating the issue.
