WATCH: Fisherman leaps head first for reel and rod

JOHN Falls was trying to get a big tuna but ended up in the water with his best mate Aaron Aldridge on the other end of his line.

While casting, his bail arm flipped over and the weight of the lure pulled his rod and reel out of his hand.

They went into the water and John followed the $1000 reel and $300 rod.

"I wasn't going to let it sink. I jumped over the edge and caught it," he said.

"I didn't realise that it hooked onto the back of Aaron as he was fighting in a tuna."

Aaron reeled in his tuna, John threw his rod back in the boat and continued to fish all day.

He said the pair would have caught over 50 fish each day on their fishing trip in Hervey Bay at the end of October.

The two Gladstone men caught fish over and over again, only breaking for lunch.

"Everything we threw at them they ate," he said.

"They were pelagic fish, like mackerel, tuna, and sail fish.

"We get them more in the winter here. A lot more fighting in comparison to what we usually get."
