Jockey rides to honour fallen friend Carly-Mae

ADRIAN Coome still walks around the stables in Rockhampton at morning track work expecting to see the smiling face of his fellow jockey Carly-Mae Pye.

It has been a tough week and a half for Coome since Pye died from horrific injuries to her head and chest from a fall in Rockhampton.

Each "first" that rears its head makes Coome think of Pye - the first time he did track work, the first race meet.

Today presents another on the list - the first trip to Gladstone's Ferguson Park without Pye in tow.

Yet it presents another opportunity to make sure the jockey is remembered in the right way.

"My only wish is to go out and race and enjoy it," he said.

"Carly was just happy to ride horses. She was competitive but not all about winning.

"They always get good crowds and I would love to see one this weekend.

"Carly was a regular in Gladstone and I hope that people recognise that and get out and honour her."

After taking out the Carly-Mae Pye Memorial race at Callaghan Park last week, Coome said he was glad to see another race named after the jockey in Gladstone.

It's scheduled for race two today and Coome is looking for another bittersweet win.

"It would be really good, it would mean a lot to me to do it again," he said.

"But either way just to race is good. I still expect to see her trotting up behind me."

Coome is riding Run 'Em Ragged in the Pye event, one of eight horses in the race.
