Pregnant woman keen to share news sped off from police

A WOMAN's urgency to tell her friend she was pregnant cost her $644 and her licence for two years.

Michelle Nicole Wheatcroft, 33, was driving through Mount Larcom at 100km/hr in a 70km/hr zone.

Police saw her, Gladstone Magistrates Court heard but she sped off, turned down a dirt road and lost control of her car, ending up sideways.

Police Prosecutor Merrilyn Hoskins told the court Wheatcroft had sped off from police, who had lights and sirens going on the Bruce Highway.

Wheatcroft turned down a dirt road and lost control.

She continued to ignore directions from the police to stop and fish-tailed down the dirt road.

Police abandoned the chase but found her at her home, where she told them she had been fishing at Calliope and was driving to a friend's place.

Defence lawyer Jun Pepito said she was speeding because she was excited to break the news she was pregnant to her friend.

"She knows she should have stopped and been issued with a ticket which would be a lot cheaper than the fine she will get today."

The minimum fine for failing to stop is $5000, but Magistrate Mark Morrow gave her nine months probation instead of a hefty fine.

She was fined a total of $644 for speeding and not having control of her car, and lost her licence for two years.
