HER girls walked in the NAIDOC Street March today.

But when Valda Dodd's grandkids Breanna and Kyeema Beezley were little she used to push them in their prams.

"We march every year," the proud grandma said.

Valda moved to Gladstone from Eidsvold, near Monto, in 1974.

She said NAIDOC Week was a special time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

"It's a big day for families.

"We get to recognise our culture, and teach our kids where they come from.

"It's important to carry culture on - I worry it will get lost."

Breanna and Kyeema's mother is non-indigenous.

And Valda said her daughter-in-law had embraced the culture.
