THE 2012 Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal was officially launched yesterday at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre.

Community representatives gathered for breakfast and to hear from guest speakers.

The Red Shield Appeal is the Salvos' major annual fundraiser with the residential doorknock held on May 19 and 20.

A donation from NRG along with an auction of Brisbane Broncos' merchandise got the 2012 appeal off to a flying start.

Captain Jeff Bush said the launch was a fabulous display of community spirit.

"Everyone who attended generated a real sense of responsibility," he said.

The Salvos are calling for businesses and community members to support this year's doorknock.
