Drivers pay no heed to cyclists
MICK Newell is sick of being run off the road.
"I've ridden from Melbourne to Cairns and this is by far the least friendly town I've ever ridden in," Mr Newell said.
He rides every day averaging 475km a week.
He said five out of those seven days there was a near miss from a truck or a car in Gladstone.
"It's getting very dangerous to be a cyclist in Gladstone," he said.
"People throw things and yell at you.
"It happens everywhere but not to the same extent as here."
Mr Newell believes the problem starts with no infrastructure for cyclists.
The only bike lane in Gladstone is on Glen Lyon Rd and it is only goes one way.
"It's ridiculous," Mr Newell said.
"Fifty billion dollars worth of development and no assistance for the most vulnerable road user."
He said cyclists had even begun to change their times and routes to suit motorists.
"It's so busy now it doesn't matter where you go," he said.
