BEFORE the chaos of long hours and frazzled Christmas shoppers, businesses at Stockland Gladstone gathered for their annual retail excellence awards.

From more than 50 shops, 13 stores were recognised on Saturday at the awards night held at Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre.

The big winner of the evening was Smokemart & Giftbox, which won both the Excellence in Sales Award for a National Retailer and the overall award of the night Retailer of the Year.

Donut King also took out two awards, winning both the Excellence in Sales Award for an Owner/Operator as well as the coveted People's Choice Award.

Stockland Gladstone centre manager Amanda Brookes said the awards had been running for the past five years.

"We hold this event each year to award our valued retailers based on individual store performance and participation over the previous financial year," she said.

"It's also a fabulous opportunity for centre staff to socialise and spend time together outside of our daily work environments."

Smokemart & Giftbox store manager Troy Gregory said it was a "massive surprise" to win Retailer of the Year.

"I was quite shocked when you look at all the stores here," he said.

"Tobacco is a major part of the business but with competition against the supermarkets that's always a factor."

He said giftware also sold well.

Smokemart is a company-owned store with its head office in South Australia. Mr Gregory is head of a team of four who look after the Gladstone store.
